Risk Factors before surgery
As with any surgical procedures, there is always a risk for complications in Plastic Surgery even when performed by the best surgeon.  You can reduce this risk providing clear and complete clinical history to your surgeon before your procedure.

One of the most serious complications in surgery is the formation of blood clots, it is not frequent, but it can lead to fatal conditions such as pulmonary embolism (clot in lung artery), so you must tell your surgeon if there is any history of this condition in your family on your own, including if a member of your family died suddenly after a surgery or childbirth.

Other factors that can contribute to the risk for blood clots are:

  • Overweight
  • Recen trauma
  • Heart, lung or central nervous system disorders
  • History of cancer, severe infections or genetic problems affecting blood clotting
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Hormone replacement therapy

According to your personal risks factors your surgeon should recommend you different measures to prevent blood clots or simply ensure an adequate position for blood circulation to the legs.  Some of these indications could be to wear elastic socks before, during and after the procedure or to take special anti clotting medications.
